Multnomah County is joining with PDX Bridge Festival to celebrate the 100th birthday of the Broadway Bridge this April. The county operates and maintains the Broadway and five other Willamette River bridges. When it opened in 1913, the Broadway Bridge played a key role in the residential development of Northeast Portland. You can leave a birthday message for the Broadway Bridge here.
To honor this milestone, PDX Bridge Fest is hosting several events. Activities include a celebration in April, an art installation, “Bridge for Blankets” this summer, gallery exhibits, a block party and guided bridge tours. In addition, yesterday, the Board of County Commissioners passed proclamation to celebrate the bridge’s centennial.
The Bridge For Blankets project needs volunteer knitters to help knit 1 ft square pieces to be joined together to create 42-6×6 foot afghans to be displayed on the bridge. Once the exhibit closes, the blankets will be given to local homeless shelters. To help with this project, please contact the artist, email@example.com or visit her web site.
